Old Prague Houses Stories
As written in my previous post, there are many houses with mystery story in Prague. This post is about another story of another beautiful house.
The Sixt House or Sixtův dům
Address: Celetná 553, 110 00 Staré Město
The Sixt House is standing on the corner of the Old Town Square and Celetná street. It got the name from Sixt of Ottersdorf, who was an Old Town Chancellor and the owner of this house in 1560. But the story is not about this man.
Story
Many years ago, a kind and honest man named Vavřinec kept an inn in the Sixt House. The joy and comfort of the guests was his main goal, so the inn had a huge menu and only the best and most delicious food.
Customers found it difficult to choose one meal from the menu. Rumors say that one man had been unable to stop eating and died at the table!
But those were hard times, and things were not going too well for the inn. People said that the menu should be reduced. But Vavřinec did not give up hope and continued to cook and serve delicious food every day. But soon he realised that only a miracle could save his inn.
One day Vavřinec was walking on Charles Bridge. He stopped next to the statue of St John Nepomuk and prayed for help. But the statue remained silent and he slowly wandered home.
That night he had a dream: a mysterious haze appeared before him and led him to the basement of the house. In the cellar the haze disappeared in front of a huge stone. And at that moment Vavřinec woke up. Confused, he went to the cellar and without difficulty found the stone under which he had discovered a huge chest full of gold!
Vavřinec was an honest man and decided to divide the gold into three parts. He spent the first part on a statue of St Nepomuk and donated it to the Týn Church, where he went to pray every day. The second part of the gold he gave to the poor. And only the third part he kept for himself – it was enough to keep the inn afloat and live comfortably for the rest of his life.
