How to repaint a monochrome object in Photoshop

Hello everyone,

I hope you are doing well and are already in a spring mood and ready to bring more color into your life! 🙂

In this post I want to share with you a quick and easy way to repaint a monochrome object in Photoshop. A little spoiler for those of you who work in Photoshop and are familiar with its features: we are going to use Clipping Mask. If you know what I mean, you can skip this post or perhaps add other known ways in the comments? Welcome!

To explain this method I am going to use an image from my Folk Bugs set in Creative Market. I know it contains an EPS vector shape that can be recolored very easily by Adobe Illustrator, but in case you are working with PNG format, here is a quick way to add colors to this bug. Please note that this will work for PNG format with transparent background! So, Step 1: open your monochrome object in Adobe Photoshop.

Step 2: Create a new layer above the layer with your image. Right click on a new layer and choose Create Clipping Mask. In the Layers panel, the new layer should look like the one in my picture.

Step 3, the final one: Select the color you need (I picked up the yellow) and create a new rectangle of that color on the Clipping Mask layer.

Ta-daa! Done and our object is recolored. Now we just need to export our colored image in desired format and that is it.

You can also play with color, e.g. add some effects like gradient, pattern or something like filter. There are so many options! 😉

I hope you find this post useful and interesting. Please let me know what you think! And read another “how to” posts here.

Thank you and have a great day!

-Tatiana
